On October 6th, Dynamite will celebrate it's fortieth anniversary with much to be thankful for. With the support and participation of friends who care, we have been able to remain true to our mission as a treatment program dedicated to helping adolescent become permanently drug-free. Doing the real work that brings about lasting change in a world that seems to embrace "a pill for every ill" is no small feat! It takes the dedication and devotion of a talented staff and determanation of all those who believe in the concept of drug-free self-help.
Dynamite will celebrate our fifty-nine graduation ceremonies: the groups of young people who have completed our rigorous program and have returned to society as constructive, contributing members, with a well-deserved sense of achievement. They have become straight, staying straight, and joining the ranks of us who honor the values of friendship, family, and the work ethic.
On October 6th, Dynamite will celebrate what we have accomplished with an old, falling-down, uninsulated, empty hotel in Fallsburg, aquired in 1972: now a beautiful main building, two separate dorms, a large gymnasium building, an educational complex, an athletic field and in-ground swimming pool, and staff housing. We did much of the work ourselves, with professional supervision.
On October 6th, we will celebrate what we have brought about in Brooklyn! From a neglected movie house-turned-disco, we created a professional and residential and residential building, slowly modernizing the original section, and finally, last year, completing two additional floors atop the building: schoolrooms, meeting rooms, group individual, and family counseling areas, and a separate floor for some who are transitioning from upstate to city, along with appropriate staff.
Dynamite will celebrate our standing at the top of this very specialized field. To quote an exerpt from the book ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT IN THE UNITED STATES: EXEMPLARY MODELS FROM A NATIONAL STUDY (Hawthorne Press, 2003), that is just as valid today: "What is generally known is that DYC is an established adolescent Therapeutic Community that has evolved over time to meet the needs of the adolescent community. DYC has thrived, in part, due to it's ability to adapt TC principles to meet the changing demands of adolescents, their parents, and the larger culture. Whether at the residential facility, the day services, or in the transition phase, members and staff work together throughout all aspects of treatment."
All of this could never have come to pass without our friends who continually provide the encouragement and wherewithal to make it happen. Please join us any way you can.
